Any successful person will tell you that one of the secrets of attaining the career and lifestyle you want is setting and achieving goals. Brian Mitchell attributes his own success both in the National Football League and in radio and television to being goal oriented.

When you are able to seriously consider what it is that you want to achieve and think about all that it means, only then are you able to put together a realistic plan for achieving that goal. This ‘realistic plan’ is like a map to your objective, or like a ladder.

You can then assign along-the-way objectives to each of the rungs of the ladder. As you work and achieve the first objective on the ladder, you can then start focusing on the next objective on the next rung. This way, step by step, you make your way towards the goal.

In his life, Brian has a couple of grand goals towards which he’s always working. For one, he always wants to make his parents proud. Even though both of his parents have now passed on, he still strives to lead a life and be a son that they’d be proud of.

Brian’s second life-long goal is to be modest. It’s true that he was a very good football player, but that’s because he worked hard and used a skill that he was born with. In professional athletics, you can find a lot of people who think they’re something special—Brian has never wanted to be one of those people.

Here are some of Brian’s tips on setting and reaching goals that have worked for him over the years:

  1. Write your goals down and save the list. Put it somewhere that you can see it.
  2. Create goals that are obtainable. While you can reach high with your goals, make sure you are realistic.
  3. Set short-term and long-term goals. You want to have some goals that can be met right away and others that are continual.
  4. Revisit your list of goals. Life changes; where you are today might not be where you are tomorrow. Revisit your goal list regularly and update it.

Brian Mitchell used goal-setting techniques to propel himself through a successful 14-year career in the NFL, and afterward into a rewarding television and radio career. This former Redskins star now shares his secrets to success with high school and college athletes, as well as with current and former professional athletes and business professionals.
